Milan, 1993
GUJA was born in Milan in 1993 thanks to Aldo, a man who entered the world of footwear not through a fashion school or family tradition, but out of pure curiosity and a refusal to stay in a job that bored him. After years in the public sector, he left everything to become a representative of a well-known shoe brand: he visited factories, tanneries, and heel workshops, spending time with artisans and Milanese shopkeepers to understand, from the inside, how a shoe is truly made and what women want to wear. He had no technical training, but he had something more useful: a true obsession with the product and the patience to learn everything from scratch.

The boutique, and the name
The opportunity arises when the owner of a well-known Milanese boutique, whom he had been supplying for years, announces she wants to sell. Aldo takes over the business with a simple idea: the lower floor as a showroom for the brand he represented, the upper floor as a sales space. He soon falls in love with the retail side: the continuous search for new products, the direct contact with customers, the pleasure of carefully listening to what women truly wanted and finding exactly that for them. The chosen name for the brand is Guja: a combination of «Guia», a rare and ancient Italian female name meaning guide, and gugia, the Milanese dialect word for the curved awl used by shoemakers to pierce leather and guide the thread during hand stitching. The J in GUJA recalls the hooked shape of that tool, a small detail that ties the brand’s identity to the oldest gestures of the craft.

Building the brand
Those first conversations with customers revealed a gap that no one had filled: the Milanese market at the time was divided between luxury boutiques and very traditional stores, with almost nothing in between for women looking for something fresh, contemporary, and truly comfortable, at a price that made sense. Aldo began attending industry fairs to find artisans and small producers capable of creating exactly this: he sat down with master shoemakers to modify shapes, adjust heels, and test materials until the result was just right. His wife joined as a partner and co-investor, and GUJA grew as things made well do: steadily, without shortcuts, relying on the strength of the product itself.

Thirty years later
Today GUJA creates two seasonal collections per year (spring/summer and autumn/winter) with just 20-25 pairs per model, restocked only where demand truly requires it. The heart of production remains in Italy, in the footwear districts of Tuscany, Marche, and Naples, with partners whose experience spans generations and some active since the early 20th century, many of whom also produce for brands like Prada, Tod's, and Dolce & Gabbana; a smaller part of the range is made by trusted partners abroad. The brand has grown from a single boutique in Milan to two stores in the city and a flagship in Rome, and today ships worldwide. The mission has not changed: to celebrate the diversity of every woman by offering a wide variety of iconic shoes, with a contemporary and Milanese spirit, elegant, comfortable, and truly accessible.

Every collection begins not with a trend report, but with a question: what does a woman really need to wear this season, and what is she still missing? In the early stages of each cycle, Aldo and the team dedicate time to silhouettes: which shapes feel current without relying on a single runway moment, which proportions work on different bodies and everyday contexts, and what will still feel right two or three seasons from now.

Then comes the search for materials, taken very seriously. GUJA works with tanneries and suppliers it has known for years, selecting leathers, suedes, and linings by hand, touching them, bending them, testing them for softness, finish, and durability even before a single sample is cut. The focus is always on materials that improve with use: leather that softens and adapts to the foot over time, lining fabrics that allow breathability, soles that provide real support throughout the day.

From there, the work passes to the factory, to the master shoemakers who have spent decades understanding how a shoe behaves on the last, how to position a heel, how a seam holds. The samples are made, worn, and corrected. The lasts are modified by hand when the fit is not yet perfect. Nothing enters the collection until it meets the standard the brand has maintained since 1993: beautiful to look at, truly comfortable to wear, made to last.

What’s behind the product
GUJA has been producing women's footwear since 1993: over thirty years of direct relationships with factories, material research, and production control. All materials in the range are EU certified. Production partners are individually selected, personally visited, and maintained through long-term relationships, not through volume contracts.

The factories GUJA works with are not anonymous suppliers. They are specialized entities, many of which are family businesses producing shoes since the early 1900s, and several also manufacture for some of the most respected names in the industry. Thirty years of working with the same hands means GUJA knows exactly what it receives, and those masters know exactly what GUJA expects. Some models are made outside Italy, by partners held to the same standard.

In thirty years, GUJA has built a base of over 30,000 customers, mainly in Italy, and today ships worldwide.
